Hajj – Allah is Calling You to Him, and to These Things.

Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik - here I come, O Allah! What are you really coming for as you invoke in your Talbiyah?

Hajj – Allah is Calling You to Him, and to These Things. Isn’t the sound of Talbiyah so familiar to us when Eid al-Adha comes around? The pilgrims invoke it, and the media airs it as well in the mood of celebration. 

Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik – here I come, O Allah! 

If you didn’t know about this before, our Talbiyah  is our answer to the direct invitation from Allah to us in the Quran: “And proclaim the Hajj to the people!”

Imagine you are performing Hajj  (and you should make an effort for that). Now, what are you really coming for, as you invoke your Talbiyah?

“I am coming to complete my fifth pillar of Islam.” Perform all the pillars and obligations of Hajj as the Manasik requires you to, and your Hajj is done. But, is that everything to it?

Coming for the unity of Tawheed

The repetition of “There is no partner to You” twice in each set of Talbiyah clearly proves this.

From the first moment of wearing the Ihram until the end of Hajj, everything about Hajj is about conclusively affirming the Tawheed as your inner and fundamental principle. 

The same goes for all the pillars of Islam. For all of them, you are establishing Tawheed in multiple forms, such as the self-establishment of Tawheed as per the shahada, and the consistent devotion to, and expression of, Tawheed for humanity.

Hajj comprises all those forms of establishing Tawheed. But there is an additional perk. You are physically performing it together with your comrades in faith from all over the world. It is an obligatory mass gathering and collective solidarity of the ummah brought  by a single uniting factor: Tawheed.

This is the missing key from the world today – a cross-national ummah beyond Hajj, that is strongly united by Tawheed and rightly guided by the principles of Islam.

Coming for the Divine equality

Performing Hajj is an energy-depleting task. Even your high status in society will not make it any easier for you. In fact, every single one of the Hujjaj is required to wear a similar austere piece of clothing.

Hajj puts emphasis on Divine equality before Allah. It is about absolute equality because Allah never looks at your gender, race, wealth, body and social status, but your innermost heart and the ‘amal that comes with it. 

As a bonus point for that, ar-Rasul SAW did remind us of equality in his last sermon during Hujjatul Wada’. (Why don’t you do a quick revision of it?)

It is also because equality is founded on Divine principles of Islam. This is not the man-made concept of equality with some distorted parts that are unaligned with Islam.

Hajj is a pillar of Islam for every single Muslim. Hence, Divine equality is required to be embedded in the heart and practice of every Muslim. And it is more so for you, the Daies and Muslim Leaders.

Coming for the Divine sovereignty

In the second part of Talbiyah, the establishment of monotheism of Allah is linked to three aspects. They are praises (al-Hamd), blessings (al-Ni’mat) and sovereignty (al-Mulk). We are familiar with the first two being from Allah. But, how about the third one?

By invoking Talbiyah, you are demolishing the link between Shirk and His sovereignty – Him being All-Sovereign of this world should forever be upheld.

Such a principle of sovereignty should define, determine and shape today’s systems of life, be it in politics, economics or societal, not just confined to within the walls of the mosque when performing the Ibadah, or being crafted beautifully in modern architecture.

Even a layman Muslim invokes the sovereignty of Allah in his Talbiyah. Therefore, the task of a Daie is to have the ummah firmly believe in it. And for Muslim Leaders to stand and fight for the sovereignty of Allah in this world by establishing the Islamic way of life, and to reject the worship of man or idols, as well as man-made systems which contradict the will of Allah.
