Allah creates myriads of blessings to facilitate mankind’s vicegerency on Earth. One of them is music. — Prof Dr Amriah Buang.
To be honest, life on Earth for the children of Adam is difficult. Ouch!
They are ‘thrown’ in this three-dimensional physical environment where their essence of feelings are more often obstructed than not.
How could they free these inner (batin) feelings so they can sustain balance and equilibrium in order to carry on with their vicegerency career here?
“Where words fail, music speaks.” (Hans Christian Andersen)
“The true beauty of music is that it connects people.” (Roy Ayers)
Allah creates myriads of blessings. As always the Almighty, whose predominant signature brand is al Rahman al Rahim, knew so well about this particular existential need of mankind. Just as He knew this species needs physical food for its physical wellbeing, He knew that it too needs sentient food for its sentient wellbeing.
So He willed the existence of music. Then He bestowed the gifts of talent to those men and women He chose as He pleased. Some He gifted with extraordinary vocal abilities, so they become the celebrated singing stars. Some He gifted with extraordinary abilities to play musical instruments, so they become acclaimed musicians. Some He gifted with extraordinary abilities to compose beautiful songs, so they become renowned composers. Some He gifted with extraordinary abilities to write moving lyrics, so they become illustrious lyricists. He arranged for all these artists to come together and create a world of entertainment for the benefit of their fellow humans. By that, He permits release and relief as a mercy to mankind.
By that also He simultaneously shows to the angels the vast and rich artistic creative intelligence of mankind which He knew mankind is capable of but which they didn’t.
“The only proof he needed for the existence of God was music.” (Kurt Vonnegut)
More, science-based facts show that music can ease pain, motivate people to exercise harder, improve running motivation and performance, increase workout endurance, speed up post-workout recovery, improve sleep quality, enhance blood vessel function, reduce stress, induce a meditative state, relieve symptoms of depressions, elevate mood, improve cognitive performance, help people perform better in high-pressure situations, reduce anxiety, relax patients before surgery, and ease recovery in stroke patients (Scott Christ, “20 surprising, science-backed health benefits of music,” USA Today, December 17, 2013).
Let’s be clear. Our arch-enemy Iblis didn’t have the power to create music so he can sabotage mankind. What he did and is doing was and is to mislead, misguide and teach mankind how to abuse and misuse music so that what was originally beautiful becomes ugly, what was intended to be good becomes bad, and what was meant to be a blessing becomes a curse.
All this is so that he can prove to the Almighty that mankind doesn’t have what it takes to be the blessed species made of mud to whom Allah had ordered him to prostrate before.
So, yes, we can have music. We just need to prevent and safeguard it from being sabotaged by Iblis and his cohorts.
