How did HAMKA manage to become such a multifaceted intellectual icon that he was?
The media is replete with news of the various forms of suffering that contemporary Muslim women and girls had undergone.
In the 7th Century, Islam had empowered women in various respects of its civilisation. But women in majority Muslim countries today are the least empowered.
14 centuries after the advent of Islam, we still know very little as to what exactly Islam says about the status of women. This is unacceptable.
As always The Almighty whose predominant signature brand is al-Rahman al-Rahim knew this particular existential need of mankind. Just as He knew this species needs physical food for its physical wellbeing, He knew that it too needs sentient food for its sentient wellbeing.
He doesn’t preach but without making much fuss he does his own amar makruf as a Muslim. Through his music, he acknowledges his listeners’ anguish and despair, their yearning for understanding, inclusion, legitimacy and consolation. You know, all those things we humans have got to grapple with from cradle to grave. So, what’s wrong with that?
Why Bismillahirahmanirrahim? Because Compassion, Beneficence, Graciousness and Mercifulness are the ruling attributes, qualities and values of how the Almighty wants mankind to live by in this worldly life.
It’s up to the OOTB Daies and mujtahidun to mobilise the power for good, to neutralise the power for bad, and to mediate the grey areas in between, that come with the unstoppable rise and reign of entertainers as social influencers in the Digital Age of 21st century Malaysia. If they succeed, they will be part of the solution to making Malay Muslim entertainers and entertainment industry a model of resurgent Islam for the world.
While the strict religious circles are bickering and splitting hairs about the harams, the makruhs, and the sins of the entertainment world, the Malaysian Malay Muslim entertainers have already shown the rest of the world how Islamic parameters positively shape their performing arts.
