The World, Not Just the Egyptians, Mourns over Mohamed Morsi’s Sudden Death.

"I don't have rights. I only have duties."

“All of us are equals in terms of rights. All of us also have duties towards this homeland. As for myself, I don’t have rights. I only have duties.” (Morsi’s first speech as the President, June 24th, 2012)

Egypt’s first democratically elected President, Mohamed Morsi, 67, was announced dead by the Egyptian authorities at 4.50 pm local time on Monday, 17th June 2019. He was sworn in as President on 30th June 2012 and was overthrown one year later out of his four-year term.

Here are some notable contributions of Mohamed Morsi to the ummah when he was in power:

1. He sent out the message that the issue of Palestine and Syria should be at the heart of the ummah regardless of territorial boundaries. He opened the border gate of Rafah between Egypt and Gaza to ease the delivery of aid to the oppressed Palestinians.

2. He marked the rise of a democratic, people-oriented leader for Egypt, a feat previously impossible to achieve in a country which had been long ruled by authoritarian leaders.

3. He defended the struggle for the resurrection of Islam, particularly in the Middle East. His rise to power has motivated Islamic movements around the world to stand up against oppressive hegemonies which have diverged from the sole interest of the Islamic deen and the ummah.
